But to my pleasant surprise, Lettich was a complete gentleman. But Menahem had an in-house fixer named Michael J. Duthie, a really good editor, and he basically re-worked the movie. Like M was Admiral Menzies. And if Jean-Claude had found out that I really was theat that time, the real force, if you wouldthat was giving him all these elements, Sheldon's usefulness would have been short-lived. And apparently it did huge business. I imagine it's hard to write a personal, firsthand account like that.Frank Dux: Here's the thing. In 1980, Frank Dux first came into the public eye via an article in the November issue of Black Belt magazine. And I showed them, here's an issue of Black Belt magazine from two years prior to this; and here's a photo of me in that magazine from January 1976 right after I won it, holding the trophy. You know, Jean-Claude was totally overwhelmed when he got to work with Stallone on Expendables 2. They were both pregnant at the same time. Dux's trophy from the Bahamas event was at least partially made in the San Fernando Valley. "Well, can I show you what I've learned since you taught me?" And I remember watching a movie where James Bond was doing jujitsu. What was the reaction like from Sheldon, Jean-Claude and Mark [DiSalle]?Frank Dux: They didn't care at that point. Well later on it comes out in court and it's a picture that they took of me on that pamphlet. But Menahem said, "No, I'm not gonna release it in theaters. It's not something that I'm interested in, but good luck." Plus, we hear LL Cool J's hip-hop prayer and the best . I don't know if the word "genius" is maybe taking it too high, but this is a very smart creative guy who is very much underappreciated. And one of those people was Sylvester Stallone, who had put the word out that he was looking for someone to help him write Rambo III. We pitched it to them and they were kind of interested, but at the end of the day they decided not to do it. He said, "Movies often come in cycles and there hasn't been a martial arts film in a while; I think that cycle is going to come back soon." And there'd be a bunch of people there with phones to record it, so we don't want this to happen.Blake Harris: Speaking of that screening, Frank had mentioned that you were crushed. Around this time, Leon Isaac Kennedy [from The White House All Stars] had been in in a Chuck Norris movie called Lone Wolf McQuade and there was talk about doing a Part Two. We were on the set of Lionheart. And that piece, filled with accusations and allegations, continues even to this day cast doubt upon the reputation of Frank Dux. Joseph Papp heard about it, so he brought the show to the Public Theatre in New York. But the real contest was just punches to the chest, and Moore beat Lee like 4-2. And he's in this movie called No Retreat, No Surrender. I thought it was Pasadena, but everyone's told me it was Long Beach. That was a term, from England, when they used to fight dogs. So those are the three elements. I had them cut down so it would fit him because I'm a bigger guy. I'm not talking our toes are over the edge. He frickin' landed on his head, in front of all my students. I'm not kidding you. He's not very good, of course, but the judo instructor steps in for Barney and then kicks the ass of the guy who's been picking on him. And what really grabbed Sheldon's attention was the fights.Blake Harris: So what happened with the script? KUMITE! And it was no-holds-barred, it'd very brutal and bloody, so it was called "Bloodsport." I don't remember in detail what our first interaction was like, but we just kind of hit it off.Blake Harris: Was it weird for you at all, as a Vietnam veteran, to be working on a book about the war that was written by someone who hadn't been there?Sheldon Lettich: Well, I didn't know that at the time. Millions of Americans were first introduced to Tiger Tanaka in the Ian Fleming novel. If you want to look it up, the SEAL manual number is K-431-0097.Blake Harris: Great. That picture with my hands crossed, you can see Bloodsport in the background. It was horrible. They were going to do a movie called Night of the Leopard but there were some problems with getting the script so now they needed a new one. That's bullshit, that's total bullshit.Blake Harris: What about those claims regarding your covert military background? It was a no-budget. And so how did you swivel from that experience into something in the film world?Sheldon Lettich: This will sound like it's coming completely out of left field, but the first time I actually got paid to write a script was a horror film that involved voodoo.Blake Harris: Yeah, I think that qualifies as "left field" status.Sheldon Lettich: [laughing] What happened was I had met [Blaxploitation star] Leon Isaac Kennedy, who wanted to option a script of mine. I mean, he couldn't do a throw. "Tagline:The True Story of an American Ninja, "All I request," Lettich started off by saying, "is that we try to keep discussion about Frank Dux to a minimum. Please note as always his opinions, recollections and claims are his own, and not necessarily fact. But the fights in the story were all real. Then all of the sudden I got hit in the face with a Black Dragon shirt, and that's how I became the youngest Black Dragon in the history of the Black Dragons.Blake Harris: That's unbelievable. I kid you not.Blake Harris: So you weren't some kind of jiujutsu prodigy?Frank Dux: Not at all. And so we climbed back over the wall and onto the set. Plus the guy was just an idol of mine. A good example of that is Bloodsport. A lot of it was based on the recollections of my friend Kurt Taylor, who I wrote the script with. ", How Did This Get Made:A Conversation With Sheldon Lettich, Screenwriter Of Bloodsport, How Did This Get Made: A Conversation with Frank Dux, the Real-Life Inspiration for Bloodsport. I wasn't going through anything like that myself, but it's therapeutic if you're able to recreate something that was an important part of your life and find a way to transmit it to other people. He's demonstrating how to do a 1-inch punch and a 1-finger push-up. I'm not quite sure why they ended up hiring other writers to do a different version of it but they did and then that became a bone of contention later on where Frank ended up suing Jean-Claude and saying Jean-Claude had promised him some big chunk of the profit participation from the movie. I actually sent for and had custom uniforms made. You see it all the time. KUMITE! In fact, I was born with my foot so pigeon-toed that it actually went backwards; my foot, it could go 180 degrees the other way. ". Oh yeah! So I go in to pitch my idea and his development executive, she was just flabbergasted when I showed her the magazine cover and told her about the idea. It was ridiculous what they had. Menahem still thought it was a piece of s***.Blake Harris: How come?Sheldon Lettich: Well, I think this might answer your question. I genuinely believed that he believes everything he told me.Sheldon Lettich: I'd tend to agree with you on that. Blake Harris: Since martial arts is, and has been, such a large part of your life, I was wondering if it was also a large part of your childhood.Frank Dux: Actually, no. It was definitely a therapeutic experience for everyone involved with the play. It was just a way to release it. And we ended up settling. Or was the movie developed in a totally different way?Frank Dux: Well I'll tell you what happened. Can you tell me about writing Enter The Ninja? He's a producer, he's got like 50 films under his belt. And, look, in the mid-80's, something like that sounded real intriguing. So these kids kind of grew up together. Released in 1988, Bloodsport tells the story of Frank Dux (Jean-Claude Van Damme), a captain in the U.S. Army and an experienced martial artist, who ignores his superiors and competes in an illegal martial arts tournament in Hong Kong. "But Sly," I said, "it really wouldn't work that way because one thing that's been established with Rambo is that he's the baddest motherf***er in the world, but he doesn't want to fight. And he just started laughing and he says, "Frank, you're crazy. And then he did a kick that missed his face by like two inches. They were supposed to present the supposed evidence that said things didn't exist. And that's one of the things that were attractive about Rambo so that's what we did with that script.Blake Harris: And what was it like working with Rambo himself?Sheldon Lettich: I was just so honored. Blake Harris: That story in the L.A. Times was pretty brutal. How blindsided were you when the piece came out?Frank Dux: Well, there was nothing I could do. Especially when it comes to the military. He's also said it under oath by the way and identified me. It's a psychological issue that, believe it or not, happens more than you would think. And I remember Mark telling us, "Menahem is thinking of casting this guy Gene Claude Van Damme. These targets included the planned mining of a Nicaraguan port and the planned sabotage of certain Nicaraguan installations including power stations and weapons depots, codenamed OPERATION CORDOBA HARBOR. And I said, "Okay, Sheldon, you get the credits, and then when you get up to the next level, you just bring me up." So the play was groundbreaking in some ways. His contract was not for writing, it was for use of his name and a portion of his "real-life story." Jean-Claude?Frank Dux: When we started? That's just point of the absurdity of the whole thing.Blake Harris: And, when you were there, how did the reporter respond to all this?Frank Dux: I embarrassed the hell out of him. And he was an idol of Jean-Claude's too.Blake Harris: Yeah? And was that something that you and Jean-Claude consciously tried to deliver (or to avoid)?Sheldon Lettich: We tried to do something atypical with Lionheart. You can listen to theBloodsportedition of the HDTGM podcasthere. No Retreat No Surrender movie led to Van Damme getting the lead in Bloodsport (1988). Bloodsport 4: The Dark Kumite. Nowadays it's all kind of clich. Like, very famously, he turned down Demolition Man. And then Hollywood got to him and he started showing signs of manic depression, you know?Blake Harris: In what way?Frank Dux: I'll never forget. In 1993, Dux got beaten up by a guy in the first tournament, a guy by the name of "Nasty" Zane Frazier, who is known for knocking himself out when he and his opponent rolled out of the ring and hit the floor. Either way, it's fair to say that filmgoers are a pretty forgiving lot. But the only guy in the world who could kill Jean-Claude with his permission is Sylvester Stallone. It was going to be a surprise appearance. I mean, they put it on the shelf for two years. A simultaneously misleading and fitting title was certainly bestowed upon Bloodsport 4: The Dark Kumite, by far the worst installment of the franchise by a longshot. Today on Variant, we give you the comic book. And I said, "Okay, after dailies, I'll meet you up there." You had mentioned that you and Sheldon reshaped that original script. And he did the helicopter kick in No Retreat, No Surrender and I was well known for my flying kicks and finishing guys off with my spinning flying kicks. In downtown L.A. And I go: Well, just do me a favor. Do you see what I'm saying? That this guy looks just like me and we should suggest it to Mark DiSalle. Bloodsport wasn't an Oscar-worthy film in any manner (the original cut was deemed unwatchable and a re-edit was completed before release), but Van Damme's stoic charisma and the memorable. And he said yeah. The Jean-Claude I knew was a person who you wanted to see win. So it should be a total of six blows, except this turned out to be a total of eight because of those two to Vic's head. I think it was Jean-Claude finally convinced them to allow him to do it. Give me a shot with him." So I just started calling it Bloodsport, and that was useful because this type of fighting, it had a different name depending on where you were. I said, "You're trying to prove to yourself that you could do it. And so yeah. He's a real talent when it comes to that. A lot of those shots came from the camera angles I had been directing. But here's a photo from the screening, so I guess at least one person wanted to have their photo taken with me. Which kind of made Grant feel better about himself. Both of them wanted to be the cop.Blake Harris: That's so funny (though it makes sense).Sheldon Lettich: It just couldn't be worked out so the project fell by the wayside until they got Stallone and Wesley Snipes to be in it. Jean-Claude saw Menahem on the street, did a U-Turn and said, "Hey Menahem, remember me? They'll cover Frank Dux being a real man, Van Damme's soft baby buns, blindfolded tea training, the not so secret illegal Kumite martial-arts tournament, Ray Jackson, and much more. We had a nice conversation and promised each other to meet up when he was back in LA. My body's fully developed, I jumped up like a bean sprout, and now I was eyeball to eyeball with Moore, who this time fought the Unstoppable Mike Stone at Long Beach. The whole martial arts thing. It's a tale so amazing that two months after the film's release, it was dismissed by the L.A. Times as nothing but a fabricated "macho fantasy." And it was a Xeroxed copy of a receipt, a copy that anyone could fabricate on a home copy machine. But what's interesting is that after the fight, I see Norris signing a program for Moore. Fun bit of trivia: Bloodsport is essentially a hoax perpetrated by Frank Dux, who made outrageous claims about this Kumite tournament that were never substantiated and are physically impossible. In fact, we explored Post Traumatic Stress in the play, but the term PTSD had not even been coined yet. Look, Stallone was the biggest star in the world at the time and to even have a meeting with him was, to me, a huge honor. If it's Stallone: no problem, he can kill me on screen at the end.Blake Harris: The ultimate complimentSheldon Lettich: Ha, yes.Blake Harris: Speaking of Jean-Claude, I imagine that you first met him around this time. So to compensate, they put me in these metal boots. And they weren't returning phone calls. I buy you dinner tonight." And Leon was going to star in the movie, which we called The White House All Stars with the "White House" being a frat house at this college where all the football players lived. I went into the offices of the L.A. Times with my attorney with the actual fight film footage. I always try to look for the best in people. You see my point? And in that way it works, I can see that. With any film that's based on a true story, there are always questions and curiosities about authenticity. This got the people at Cannon re-thinking Bloodsport and they decided to do a test run on the west coast. After directing Jean-Claude in Double Impact [1991] and Lionheart [1990] before that, was there any reason you didn't want to be involved with writing or directing?Sheldon Lettich: That was right after another movie I did called Only the Strong [1993] and I seemed to have a lot of other things going on. For me, martial arts is just a release. A number of ideas were thrown out. So I climbed up on the ledge with him. Also, Idris Elba's voice is just something else. By this time we knew that Frank was full of baloney with a lot of the stuff that he was saying about his life. If they'd actually served. Another thing was that had I co-directed The Quest with Jean-Claude, it might have contributed to a mistaken notion that Jean-Claude co-directed Lionheart and Double Impact with me. And he was friendly to me. It was a horrible film. Well I did, and I landed one right on his nose.Blake Harris: Really?Frank Dux: Yeah, and he was not happy about that. Because my idea for Rambo III was: well, there's only one place Rambo could goAfghanistan. Use promo code BONKERS for a free month. And so he says yeah, sure, give it a shot. Sadly not at all. And the CIA and everyone is obligated to tell you? Only the part relating to the Kumite because he was going to hang on to the rest of his rights for the rest of his "exploits" for other movies. In fact, that was the script for Stallone that Jean-Claude gave me some dialogue help with.Blake Harris: Ah, right after Bloodsport. Three months later, it formally opened at the Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles to rave reviews. So we pitched him Legionnaire, gave him the treatment and Ed went for it.Blake Harris: You mentioned that Columbia passed on Legionnaire because it didn't "stick with the Van Damme formula."
